TVN Tip of the Week July 30, 2007

Benefit from the experience of others. New and developing VA’s, even those with considerable experience can always benefit from alliances with other VA’s who possess more experience or a different skill set. You can provide a great source of referrals and subcontracting for one-another as well as friendship and support. Groups like The Virtual Nation or IVAA are great places to start.

VIRTUAL BUSINESS SELECTED AS SEMI-FINALIST FOR $1,000.00 SMALL BUSINESS GRANT FROM IDEACAFE.COM

SACRAMENTO, CA, -- Michelle Ulrich of The Virtual Nation(tm) has been selected from 762 applicants as a semi-finalist in the running to receive a $1,000.00 small business grant from Idea Cafe.com, a top-rated small business website for small business.

The field of semi-finalists for this grant will be reduced to finalists and the winner will be determined by the vote of IdeaCafe.com's 32,000 members worldwide and announced online on August 15, 2007, Idea Cafe's 12th anniversary online.

The Virtual Nation is an educational destination for virtual professionals offering free and low-cost educational resources to members worldwide . Their free monthly Expert Teleclass Series is attracting listeners from as far away as Spain, Argentina, Canada (BC to Quebec) and many other countries. Each month an expert is chosen to speak on a topic of interest to both the membership and Virtual Professional community. Speakers have included Stephanie Chandler, author of "From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur" and founder of http://www.propublishingservices.com/, Donna Gunter, founder of Online BizU http://www.onlinebizcoachingcompany.com/, Patricia Beckman, founder of http://www.cybertaryfranchise.com/, the first Virtual Assistant franchise in the United States, among others. Teleclass listeners have been very pleased with this free educational resource. One such listener recently responded with, "This was an amazing topic and teleseminar!" These are typical responses received after each teleclass.

In addition to free monthly teleclasses, The Virtual Nation offers countless free resources on its site. Resources range from free QuickBooks for startup businesses to a listing of global Virtual Assistant organizations and free office templates and forms to topics like Virtual Assistant Myth Busters. This resource list grows each month because members send in their favorite resources and Michelle is also consistently updating the site herself.

Ulrich is an advocate for education through free teleclasses and resources offered via The Virtual Nation(tm) as well as working hard in collaboration with peers across the state of California with an organization called the Business Education Statewide Advisory Committee (BESAC) http://www.calbused.org/. Virtual Assistants are going to community college throughout California, the United States and Canada to learn how to be a successful Virtual Assistant. Through statewide grants, Ulrich and her peers have been reworking the existing Virtual Assistant curriculum. It's very robust and now offers a certificate, AA and AS degrees. Ulrich, herself, has been preparing to teach her first Virtual Assistant class, "Creating and Managing a Virtual Office," at Shasta Community College http://www.shastacollege.edu/ where she is encouraging people all across the country to take her class. She has been a Virtual Assistant/Professional for the past five years and has immersed herself in helping others become successful, too.

With sites like Elance.com and Guru.com, it is hard for Virtual Assistants and Virtual Professionals to differentiate themselves. Virtual Assistants and Virtual Professionals provide ongoing support to their clients in a collaborative manner while one-time projects are best utilizing services like Elance.com and Guru.com. These sites provide a great service; however, there really isn't a place for Virtual Assistants and Virtual Professionals to network with their potential clients. The Virtual Nation is working on unveiling a service like no other to support this very need. Be on the watch for their big launch in the next few months!

To sum up The Virtual Nation and what it stands for you only need to look as far as its motto written by Chief Villager, Michelle Ulrich: "If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes a virtual village to grow a successful business."

Francie Ward, CEO of IdeaCafe.com, explained that the semi-finalists for this grant, The Al Marks Inventive Mind Grant, "demonstrate an inventive approach which will inspire others who come to IdeaCafe.com seeking advice on starting and running a business, plus they have a plan to reach out and help others in some way."

IdeaCafe.com, online since 1995, is known for its "Fun Approach to Serious Business" (sm) and popular CyberSchmooz community forum to help small businesses get informed, network and thrive. IdeaCafe.com is based out of Medford, Oregon.

More details about Idea Cafe's Al Marks Inventive Mind Grant can be found in The Small Business Grant Center at http://www.ideacafe.com/

TVN Tip of the Week July 16, 2007

Never stop marketing. There is a tendency among human beings to sit back and take it easy when they think they have "enough". When you feel that your client list is full, do you stop marketing? Have you considered the inevitable "churn" that you will experience of clients who move on for whatever reason and the fact that you will need to replace them? Keep your name out there. Continue to participate in the VA world at large - even though you don't really "need" to. Opportunities may come your way that are even better than the ones you have now.

TVN Tip of the Week July 9, 2007

Find your niche! A growing trend in the virtual business world is to target your business toward a certain segment of the market. While this has always been the case in advertising - the new opportunities afforded by the virtual world make this more important and easier than ever. Want to work with writers or authors? Coaches? Pet experts or herbalists? All of these groups have online communities. Find out where the "hang out" online and become a part of their community. Offer your advice and become known for your business knowledge. It will only be a matter of time before you convert those contacts into clients.

TVN Tip of the Week July 3, 2007

Get all of your business forms letter perfect and keep them that way. Nothing screams unprofessional like a contract with a typo or the wrong client name! Triple check everything. The best way to make sure your forms are in top shape is to work on them when you aren't busy. Take your time. Familiarize yourself with every detail. Then save them. All future forms should be built off of your original.
